SLR lens filter - Glass inside spins?
I just bought a Canon 58mm UV filter (made in the USA) for my Canon SLR lens. When I was wiping it down, I noticed the glass (or plastic) was able to spin within the filter. Is this a bad sign that the filter is poorly manufactured. Will it protect my lens less? Should I return it?
The filter is fine. I have a few that do this. I don't like it and some actually have a ring that has little notched in it that allow a - spanner wrench - to be used to tighten this ring down. However, many today do not use this more expensive assembly technique and the glass part it held within a crimped grove of the metal band that makes up the outside of the filter.
Your UV filter is fine, it's just cheaper assembly techniques being used today. Most likely it was made in China.
